so, i'm trying to become hip and relevant by starting a blog for my class. i was looking on youtube for interesting videos and came across this clip from gary soto. gary is a writer of young adult fiction.

he is also the funniest man ever as evidenced by this sweet video.

poll: should i show this to my students?

now reading: blood meridian or the evening redness in the west and it's blowing my mind. i usually have one mind blowing read a year and this is it. my mind is blown to bits of sage and fire.

now listening: chopin. i like him. he is the randy newman of the romantic era.

now getting ready for: finally making a real rio bravo record.

happy for: finding a fisher price record player someone was throwing out at school during my prep period.

sad about: having a job where little humans you actually care for constantly tell you they hate you and how bad you are at your profession. my wife tells me to not let it bother me but i really can't.

happy about: dinner i made and some stuff i'm writing and the wife i had dinner with. i'm also happy about the dog i played fetch with and the fantasy baseball league i'm into with my homies.

2006 year in review

my favorite movie i saw last year was casino royale. i also saw a lot of things on netflix. my favorite movie i rented was shoot the piano player. i hadn't seen it until this year. my favorite book was the beautiful and damned. my favorite record was leon russell self titled. my favorite wife was robyn. my favorite food: the sushi platter at koba (followed closely by klamata olives and goldfish crackers). my favorite drink was the cha cha bloody mary with horseradish, pickled green beans, and olives. my favorite time of day was the morning just before i leave for work when i say goodbye to robyn while she sleeps. i tend to think of each day as precious because each day could be my last the way i live my rebel life. my favorite new interweb site was tomgreen.com. my favorite bible is my new esv leather cool one. my favorite idea was to put beef jerky in said bloody mary. my second favorite idea was to become a rawkstar.

this is cool to me.

from the cleveland plains dealer...

On the last day of the Indians' recently completed Fantasy Camp in Winter Haven, Fla., eight teams of campers faced a team of former Indians big-leaguers. Hall of Famer Bob Feller faced 24 batters -- the first three batters from each of the eight teams -- and allowed four hits.

Feller, 88, threw from the required distance of 60 feet, 6 inches.

i'm not really looking forward to going back to work next week. the job's tough and not very enjoyable. it pays the bills, which is what we need at this point. i hope i'm not doing it in thirty years, though (or three). anyhow, time to make robyn dinner- which is a highlight.

merry christmas to all... including my enemies (of which i have many).

we are celebrating this fantastic day by both eating and opening things. wanting to make the day extra special, my dad paid fifty dollars for baseball legend don sutton to call the house and read the christmas story to us. it was a very heart warming gesture, though don read to us from the roxy extreme bible for teen girls- so there were a lot of 'ums', 'unt uhs', and 'lols'.

in other news, santy brought me two sweet pendelton's and a gift card to buy sweet books. he brought robyn lumps of coal. they were chocolate covered, though, so she wasn't too disappointed.

i would also like to wish merry awesome love vibes on darren and becca!

12.22.2006

i am very tired. trevor and i went skiing all day. it was quite fun- hardly anyone on the slopes. my dad had to quit because his body is breaking down. he's almost sixty; he's not long for this world.

in other news-- i had psketti, sauce, and three packs of emergen-c for supper. robyn tried to convince me they actually used paul newman's blood for the sauce. i was excited for a moment- seeing as i would gain his powers- but she was just pulling my leg. out of revenge, i threw her off the balcony (just like daniel craig might do to his wife in a similar situation).

i am very tired, so my writing session turned into me passively watching mary poppins on television while ranking my top fifteen dylan songs for really no good reason. it's probably because i'm depressed about what i did to robyn.

anyhow, here goes: fab fifteen!

15. visions of johanna - no direction home version

beaver town, usa

so, my last few days have been a bit interesting. on tuesday, after robyn's final at csun, we drove up to ventura for a pre-colorado christmas dinner with aunt, uncle, poppo, anne, trevor, and parents. it was quite nice- the highlight being the homemade tamales which were quite delectable.

after the dinner, we went back to my parent's house to pack. seeing as we were leaving at about 3:00 am, i decided to stay up all night long (use frat boy voice in your head and read that last part again). my good bro, mike askay, driving one of the cars to the airport, came with his fiancé and a deer head. i immediately began running around the house scaring sadie. i gave the head the voice of a dead civil war girl ghost. i also used it in gross ways that made robyn scowl.

fast forward to the airport. i slept in the terminal and on the plane, which was my plan. about two hours into our flight, and about five minutes after the pilot told us we were twenty minutes away from denver, he alerted us that we would be turning the plane around. robyn woke me up; i thought she was fibbing. she was not. i went back to sleep. mike's fiancé, danielle, had landed in denver on a separate flight and ended up stranded. she nearly died in the terminal and had to eat her arm to survive.

when we got back to los angeles, after much discussion, we decided to rent a van and drive. we were told we couldn't make it to vegas, but we did. we were told we would die in mesquite… but we didn't (though anne lost an eyeball). we were then told we couldn't make it to the rockies, which we did.

now we're staying in beaver creek. the roads are still closed some heading into denver, but we were able to stay at this piece of crap resort. we're hunkered down in this junkhole of a place with cheeses, petron, and luncheon meats galore. some guy my dad knows is letting us stay until the storm blows over. i'm praying it doesn't blow over until sometime in march- though we should be pulling out saturday morning.

i will ski tomorrow. i can walk to the lift from the condo.
